  Hacking & Countermeasures

Course Overview

This one-day course is designed to demonstrate the devices and techniques hackers have at their disposal today. Focus is placed on understanding how the hackers hack and learning how to prevent network attacks and minimize risks. Students will get an understanding of the various tools at a hacker's disposal, as well as many of the social engineering techniques that hackers engage in to get information about companies and their networks. The course has live demonstrations of real hacking tools and information on how the hacker obtains them. After exploring the vulnerabilities that hackers exploit, students will be introduced to some of the tools and techniques that are at their disposal to prevent attacks. Some of these tools include detecting attacks in computer logs, tips on how to secure computers, how to obtain some of the tools students need to defend themselves, and how to use encryption and digital signature technologies to keep private data secure and verify the authenticity of messages.

Course Outline
Network Security Issues
This section is an introduction to some of the security issues we face today. Figures from several sources are presented to put the importance of security into perspective. Also included in this section are demonstrations of sites that have been attacked.

General Hacking Techniques
This is an overview of some of the techniques and tools available to the hacker and how the hacker would deploy them. Also, sources that the hacker would use to obtain these tools are revealed. Other issues discussed here include: activities in which computer hackers engage and what kind of information is of interest to a hacker.

Exploiting Vulnerabilities
In this portion of the presentation, network attacks that exploit system weaknesses are explored. Also, a step-by-step analysis of specific network attacks is covered. Live demonstrations are used to show how vulnerabilities can be exploited, and how weak passwords can be cracked with relative ease.

Detection and Assessment Tools
Various detection and assessment tools are discussed in this section including freeware tools administrators can download and implement immediately. Live demonstrations show how to obtain, install and deploy these tools that an important part of maintaining personal and network security.

Computer Attack Signatures
Most computer attacks leave clues. This portion of the seminar focuses on how to detect the traces LEFT by some common attacks in computer logging tools.

Risk Management
This section you will learn how to minimize the threats and prevent losses due to various network and host attacks. You will learn about the various products that help you with risk management.
